Molded plastic breakfast chairs & legless rattan chair swing (1962)
A graceful curve can do wonders to scotch the ultra-functional, ultra-durable look designers try so hard to avoid.
In Mr and Mrs Berliner’s Los Angeles family room, three-dimensional curves are given full, effective play in a variety of way, the molded plastic breakfast chairs, the shaped steel fireplace, the bubble lighting fixture, the legless rattan chair that hangs from the ceiling.
The room has steely sinews — plastic counters and tabletops, travertine flooring — but the click of dishes and heels is pleasantly muffled by the deep-textured acoustical ceiling.

Blue striped mod vintage Viko chair (1962)
A woodpecker can’t tell the difference. (but you’ll know it’s Vikowood — after years of impeccable wear)
Beneath the warm wood beauty of Vikowood is the heart of steel. It’s a product of Viko research. It’s one reason you can live with Viko under rugged conditions— parties, pets and children.
One more good reason is the double life led by Viko’s comfortable urethane foam cushions. We call it Twintex, an upholstery that resists everything but the eye. One side is covered with a leather-like plastic, and the other with a matching striped fabric.
Use one for daytime play, the other for evening entertainment. Choose Viko to furnish a family room, a dinette or to add an occasional chair. For further protection, Viko tabletops won’t nick, stain or mar.
Viko takes a lot of everything — except money and care. Small cost for a lasting investment. It lets kids be themselves. They can romp, sprawl, spill and tumble. Now — spare the child and punish the furniture. Viko takes it, beautifully.

Curvy mod sixties green velvet love seat chair on thin metal legs (1969)
The inhibited love seat.
Movies, shows, books, even TV have gotten sexier.
Why should the love seat be the last to shed its inhibitions? We don’t think it should. That’s why we created the uninhibited two-seater shown below.
It’s all curves. Soft. Sensuous. Enveloping. Outrageous comfort on straight, sleek chrome legs.
You can have it in velvet. Or you can have it in hundreds of different fabrics, including chamois leather, vinyls and suedes.
Maybe it’s not a love seat your mother could love. It’s not overstuffed, and there isn’t a bit of fringe anywhere. It’s clean-cut and simple. The way all our furniture is.
Sure, our love seat shatters a few old-fashioned ideas. But, then, it’s a love seat, isn’t it?

One Response
My mom had that Selig Thoroughbred sofa in another color. I can vouch for how it (in our living room), and the old Herman Miller leather sofa of a similar design (in our family room), were the most comfortable sofas to sleep on, ever. I took many a nap on both models from childhood until I moved out for good. Not sure about the Selig, but the Herman Miller is still in use. During some wild redecorating binge, my mom felt sorry for my druggie cousin and gave him that Herman Miller. He passed it on to a friend, who passed it on to a friend, who… Well, it turned out that a neighbor of mine in a city 100 miles away ended up with that old sofa. I know because 4-year-old me colored one of the feet with a Sanford marker, and it never did come off. I saw that at a guy pal’s house and burst into laughter. “That’s my mom’s old sofa! How did you get it?” I think he found it at the local thrift shop for something like $15 bucks. It’s now worth a fortune, but he won’t part with it for any reason because–yep–it’s still the best nap sofa, ever. I keep trying to buy it from him, but no deal.
