The best vintage brownie recipes have all stood the test of time

Ready for some good old-fashioned chocolate treats? Chewy, dense and usually — but not always — super chocolatey, brownies are one of the easiest and fastest of all bakes, even without a box mix. What could be sweeter than that?

How do you make brownies?

Typically, brownie recipes mix up quickly using just one bowl, a mixing spoon, and a relatively short list of ingredients. To be ever-ready to whip up a batch, keep the following brownie ingredients on hand:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Vegetable oil and/or butter
  • Vanilla
  • Cocoa and/or baking chocolate

Optional ingredients might include:

  • Chocolate chips (or other flavored chips like white chocolate, butterscotch, or peanut butter)
  • Chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts or macadamia nuts
  • Add-ins like marshmallows, coconut, cream cheese, chocolate candies, and/or maraschino cherries
  • Frosting (canned or homemade)

Once the ingredients are well blended, pour the brownie batter into a lightly greased pan and bake at 350F for anywhere from 30-40 minutes.

The most important tip for brownies? Don’t overbake! When checking for doneness, you should see moist crumbs clinging to the toothpick.
