Try this classic chocolate-orange dream cookies recipe from 1994 — an orange-flavored chocolate chip treat that’s similar to the popular white chocolate-orange dream cookies recipe!

Along with the grated orange rind and orange juice in the dough, this chocolate dreams recipe includes an optional glaze made of OJ, orange liqueur and powdered sugar — which gives this dessert a little extra zing.

Adapted from a recipe published in The Herald-Palladium (Saint Joseph, Michigan) October 24, 1994

Ingredients

  • 1-1/4 cups firmly-packed light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter flavor shortening
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon finely-grated orange peel
  • 1 egg
  • 1-3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the optional glaze

  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons fresh orange juice
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons orange flavor liqueur (or additional orange juice)

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 F. Place sheets of foil on countertop for cooling cookies.
  2. If you wish to glaze the cookies, prepare it by combining the last 3 ingredients: confectioners' sugar, orange juice and liqueur. Stir until well-blended. Save to brush on freshly-baked cookies.
  3. In a separate large bowl, combine brown sugar, shortening, orange juice, vanilla and orange peel.
  4. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until well-blended.
  5. Beat egg into the creamed mixture.
  6. Combine flour, salt and baking soda.
  7. Mix into creamed mixture until just blended.
  8. Stir in chocolate chips.
  9. Drop by rounded tablespoons about 3 inches apart onto an ungreased baking sheet.
  10. Bake one baking sheet at a time at 375 (F) for 8 to 10 minutes for chewy cookies, or 11 to 13 minutes for crisp cookies. Do not over-bake.
  11. Brush on cookies immediately after removing them from the oven.
  12. Remove cookies to foil to cool completely.

Notes

Variation: Place brown and orange candy-covered chocolate pieces (like m&ms) on the top of the cookies before baking.
