1959 Buick design breaks with traditional style
From the The Semi-Weekly Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington) Nov 26, 1958
Buick’s 1959 automobiles are described by General Manager Edward T. Ragsdale as “a whole new concept in automotive design … the new Buick is a complete break with traditional design.”
The 1959 line includes 15 models in three newly named series: LeSabre (the lowest-priced), Invicta and Electra (the luxury model).
LeSabre and Invicta have a 123-inch wheelbase and are 217.4 inches long. Electra models are available in two overall lengths. The stock Electra is mounted on a 126.3-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 220.6 inches. The Electra “225” is mounted on the same wheelbase with 225.4 inches in overall length.
Hardtop models are under 55 inches tall, but headroom is about the same as it was in the 1958 models.
Electra and Invicta series cars are equipped with a new Wildcat V-8 engine with 401 cubic inch displacement and a four-barrel carburetor. The compression ratio is 10.5 to 1.
Ratio is same
The LeSabre engine has a 364-cubic inch displacement and is equipped with a two-barrel carburetor, with four-barrel carburetor offered as an option. Compression ratio in LeSabre engines is 10.5-to-1 when equipped with Dynafiow transmission.
The new styling is highlighted by “delta-wing” rear fenders that flare outward. The twin headlights are canted at an angle to carry out the front end design.
The new four-door hardtop design has a flat roofline with a slender pillar behind each rear door. The area behind the rear pillars is encased in a huge, curved “picture window” enclosing the rear passenger compartment.
Buick’s redesigned twin-turbine Dynaflow transmission is standard in all but the LeSabre series. Triple turbine Dynaflow is optional on all series.
