Here’s a retro recipe for little chocolate crackle cookies — delicious treats that are always a hit, and are particularly popular treats around Christmastime!

Made with melted semi-sweet chocolate chips, these small cookies are covered with powdered sugar, which “cracks” the surface as it bakes, giving them a distinctive look. 

This crackles recipe, created by Quaker Oats, was originally named “Double Chocolate Treasures” when it was published back in 1987, as you can see in the vintage 80s ad below. The cracked appeared alongside two other Quaker recipes: Choco peanut butter dreams and chocolate cherry brownies.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate pieces
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups Quaker Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a heavy saucepan over low heat, melt 1 cup chocolate chips*. Stir until smooth; cool slightly.
  3. Beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Blend in eggs, vanilla and melted chocolate.
  5. Add combined dry ingredients except powdered sugar, stir in remaining chocolate pieces.
  6. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in powdered sugar, coating heavily.
  7. Place on greased cookie sheet; bake 10 to 12 minutes.
  8. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet, then remove to wire rack. Store in airtight container.

Notes

* To microwave, place the chocolate chips in a glass container. Microwave on high 1 to 1-1/2 minutes; stir after 1 minute. Stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
