This post-war modern ranch home in Los Angeles was built in 1948, and decorated by the editorial staff of House Beautiful magazine.

They named the house their “pace setter” — a model home that represented the newest and best design elements of that year.

The dramatic rise of the ceiling accentuated the drama of the garden view through the window wall. Note the massive size of fireplace masonry.

Seating in the living room was all grouped in a cozy recess under the wide ceiling cove, which was also a source of indirect night light.

Rising rafters of the shed roof added extra force to the drama of the huge (14 foot high) window wall.

The living room and garden room (courtyard) flowed together as one. It achieved privacy indoors, even though a great deal of glass was used.
