As seen here as part of a 1960s show home, the elegant modern master bedroom suite had an emphasis on relaxation, purposely making space for things like quiet conversations by the fireplace.

The room could be isolated from the rest of the house, or could be open and very much a part of the rest of the home.

This room offered wide variations on the qualities and light made possible by the use of shutters and lightproof draperies. When the drapes and shutters were open, the room was a continuous part of the patio, so it appeared much lighter, larger, and less enclosed.

The refined bedroom had a tall wall of glass that faced the central garden room — an open-air patio enclosed by the house on three sides, and greeted by a terrace where it met the outdoors.

Above, see the bedroom’s sitting area as it looked when the shutters were closed, draperies drawn, and a fire lighted on the hearth. Then, the room was more intimate and enclosed.

The inside seating area included a pair of armchairs and a matching ottoman. They were positioned near the fireplace — a tall stone hearth painted beige to match the curtains, shutters and much of the room’s woodwork.

The thick carpet in the room had bands of red and brown stripes that echoed the straight lines in the herth, windows and patio doors.
