About the new Macho cologne (1976)
From The Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) – December 17, 1976
Christmas is a time of extravagance — the spending of many dollars — and in recent years much of it on scents for men. Faberge has launched a new line called “Macho.”
They tell us that it is the “most exciting men’s line ever created” and THE status gift for Christmas. They could be prejudiced.
Faberge isn’t modest in its claims. “Faberge’s Brut for men, introduced in 1964, revolutionized men’s usage of cologne,” they brag.
Then they go on for seven pages to explain Macho, “a quality which has always been a vital characteristic of the male species.”
They came up with the information that a definition can be found in the Velasquez Spanish-English Dictionary, which defines macho (mah-cho) as “masculine, vigorous, robust, male.”
They quote Alan King as saying, “Macho, to me, is force, power, unspoken violence… my wife has Macho.”
And Margaux Hemingway says, “My Macho man is hot on the inside and cool outside!”
And Henny Youngman: “Macho? Well, I used to have it. No, wait a minute, I think I’ve still got it!”
And Rona Barrett: “A macho man to me is someone who, when they walk, you can hear them clank… just the way you clank when you see them walk.”
Macho cologne ranges in price from $7.50 to $12.50, depending on whether it is a 2-ounce size or 3-3/4 ounces in a pour bottle, or spray. Soap-on-a rope and spray deodorant is $4.
