Cabriole perfume by Elizabeth Arden (1978)

There is this woman. Watch her. She is a tapestry of delicious contradictions. Capable of laughter that all the world may witness. And of tears that no one will ever see.

A swimmer who may never enter the water. A musician who may choose to listen rather than to play. A wife who feels like a lover. A mother who remembers what it was like to be a child.

There is this woman. And here is the fragrance that defines her: a melding of flowers and more flowers, mingled with a fresh flourish of spices.

We call it — Cabriole, by Elizabeth Arden. Because there’s never been a better, more rewarding time to be a woman.

Chant d’Aromes perfume by Guerlain (1970)

The language of flowers.
Rose. “Your sorrows are mine.”
Gladiola. “You pierce my heart.”
Poppy. “My dreams are of you.”
Geranium. “You are childish.”
Lilac. “Do you still love me?”
Anemone. “Go away!”
Camellia. “I shall love you always.”
Marigold. “What is the matter?”
Jasmine. “Our love will be sweet.”

A century ago lovers were shyer than now and conveyed their deepest; emotions by means of flowers. An orchid clutched in a maiden’s moist hand said, “I await,” while a sprig of holly sent through the mail meant. ‘I’m afraid to approach.”

Guerlain has taken the essence of the most eloquent flowers and compressed it into a fragrance. Chant d’Arémes. When there are no words.

70s perfume: Parure perfume for women from Guerlain (1977)

Look closely at any woman and you will come to understand the inner mood behind her outer expression.

Similarly, every great perfume has its inner mood of soul.

Parure is a wildly original blend of lilac and amber, cypress, and plum blossoms.

Outwardly it expresses a radiant beauty, remote, almost unobtainable.

But consider it as you would a diamond. Peer deep within. You will discover an inner fire, burning with promise like the rising sun.

You don’t just dab on a perfume like Parure.

You wear it body and soul.

Wild Lemon fragrance products from Revlon (1972)

Who’s to say it was an apple?

It could have been the fragrance of a “Wild Lemon’ that changed the course of history. Revlon’s “Wild Lemon.”

So much more than a quick tingle, it makes all other lemon fragrances seem naive by comparison.

‘Wild Lemon’ is strangely haunted by other scents, other mysteries — exotic essences that make it last and last. It’s the kind of forbidden fragrance you’d expect Revlon to discover.

  1. Would love to stick my nose into some Coty Sweet Earth Woods Fragrances and Love’s Lemon Fresh! Also remember being a fan of Emeraude and JoVan Musk Oil. Been chasing the scent of the Coty Sweet Earth sandalwood fragrance my whole life and to this day have still not found anything that smells like it. It had a sweet sandalwood smell. I loved that stuff!

  2. Hi Peg,
You might want to try submitting your fragrance request to “The Fragrance Shop” as they are responsible for re-creating retro or discontinued fragrances. They make them into oil formulas and can be purchased in a small vial for $6 plus shipping that lasts 14 days. Then if you like, these can be purchased in larger quantities. I just found this website and I am excited to try them!
    Good luck!

  3. I remember one of my favorite perfumes from the 70’s and I believe it was called Mata Mata but unsure where or if it is still made? Love the Musky Smell of it

  4. Lovely, lovely Aliage ~ the most glorious green scent.
It has to be vintage tho, the modern formulation is a travesty of the original.
Oh, and Givenchy lll ~ another gorgeous Chypre Floral.

  5. Aw. I was hoping for Love’s Baby Soft, but I guess that has been done and done. Great listing!

  6. I recall many of these and was a big fan of Casaque and Lauren. I also loved Tatiana by Diane von Furstenberg, which didn’t make the list. And all the lemon fragrances were fun. Thanks for the lovely trip….

  7. I’ve been on a search for a wonderful 1970’s fragrance. I can’t remember the name, unfortunately, but it was something like Colonial Herbal Garden. It was in a small glass bottle with a domed top, dauber attached. The fragrance was green, and the clear bottle had a floral label on it. Crazy how it haunts me, but I’ve been unable to solve this mystery! Wondering if anyone knows what fragrance this was.

  8. I am looking for a French perfume with a painted scene on the bottle of a couple dancing or embracing in a garden the name of perfume in french maybe something like in the garden of les bois… I think the perfume maker had a name like jean phillipe
