Here’s a taste of 1930s home style — the surprise being that was actually designed in the 1970s!

To create an alcove in this bedroom where none existed before, interior designer David Barrett flanked a canopy with armoires, curtains and crystal sconces.

He completed the look of the faux alcove in this soft yellow bedroom by placing mirrors on the back wall and the ceiling, which added visual space, and created the illusion that the bed and niche receded into the wall.

On the outside of the bed niche, a wooden armchair with green upholstery sits across from a glass-topped bamboo end table — both resting on top of a soft silvery shag carpet.

The mirrors’ reflection shows an abundance of flowers — from a painting on the wall, an antique chair, and a pillow-covered daybed.
