This 1970s conversation area — which could be part of a mod family room or contemporary living room — got the right vibe from a spirited mass of color.

A dazzling rug was mounted to simulate a contemporary painting and hung on the long wall, where it became a compelling conversation piece.

The roomy sofa, leather armchair, and the pair of contour-molded swivel chairs provided plenty of seating in an extremely efficient grouping.

Rather than a coffee table in front of the couch, instead, end tables served the couch and the nearby chairs.

Notice the interesting lighting arrangement: a tall porcelain lamp, keyed to the blue-purple color scheme, shed soft light at the left. Meanwhile, a ceiling fixture, shaded for softness, hung at the opposite end, freeing the table beneath for extra accessories.

Natural light was filtered by the sheer curtains during the day.

This room had a solid, well-organized appeal and was considered to be sophisticated without being bizarre.
