A pinch of nostalgia: Retro St Patrick’s Day cards from the 70s & 80s

St Patrick’s Day, once a celebration deeply rooted in Irish culture, had transformed into a widespread festive occasion across America by the time the 1970s and 80s rolled around. This party was for everyone — not just the sons and daughters of Éire.

During these decades, St Patrick’s Day parades swelled in size and spectacle, with cities from coast to coast putting on the grandest display of Irish pride. The parades were a kaleidoscope of green, with floats, bands, and marchers all paying homage to Ireland’s heritage.

Don’t pinch me!

Beyond the public celebrations, schools and communities also embraced the day with passion. It became an unwritten rule that on March 17th, you wore green to school.

This wasn’t just a nod to tradition, but a (mostly) playful pact among children. Forgetting to don your green attire could result in a day filled with (usually) light-hearted pinches, a quirky reminder of the day’s significance.
