This house was brand new back in 1962 — one of five built for Better Homes & Gardens magazine’s “Idea Home” Program.

Spirits soared as high as the tall ceiling when entering this spring-bright midcentury modern living room — the tall glass gables made it bright and airy all year round.

The interior paneling added the warmth of wood — and it brought a subdued shade of exterior stain inside — one that was just a little darker than the color of the hardwood parquet floors.

The dark beams on the vaulted ceiling were 4x8s, and they supported the wallboard you see, as well as and the insulation and roofing above.

Because all of the 8-foot-tall doors opened outward — onto the brick patio and the wide-open backyard beyond — it was easy to arrange furniture near them.

All the furnishings seen here — three comfy green armchairs, an elegant round wooden coffee table, a color-rich impressionist-style rug — was inexpensive and as informal, modeled on the needs of a young, bustling family.

A standout feature in this room was all about the color: the five roller blinds on the tall window wall.

Colored bright spring green, sky blue, and poppy orange in a floral pattern over stripes, these affordable shades had a printed fabric that was laminated on one side for duarbility.
