You aren’t going to find breakfast cereal boxes labeled gluten-free or keto from the eighties, but 80s cereal had its own trendy charms.

You were probably more interested in Rainbow Brite, Smurf Magic Berries and/or ET cereal than the healthiest options, anyway. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong cereals were even a thing! The 1980s wasn’t the last decade that breakfast cereal brands leveraged the gamer market, but it was certainly the first.

This is also the first decade that lower-sugar cereal sweetened with Nutrasweet/aspartame showed up on supermarket shelves (an ingredient that was already popular in diet sodas).

One wouldn’t think there was anything all that special about the cereal aisle at your grocery store, but as this throwback homage to popular 80s cereal proves, cereal packaging and its marketing angles really reflect the era it came from. -BB

BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE! Cereals from the 1950s | 1960s breakfast cereals | Vintage 1970s cereals | Radical 90s cereals
